The First Day Of Our Blackpool Weekend

05/05/23

Up at 06:30 and straight into the bathroom for a shave and a shower ready for our weekend in Blackpool, staying at the Savoy Hotel for three nights via Caledonian Travel (coach). We have stayed at the Savoy before. It's not the Ritz, but we have paid practically bugger-all, so what can you expect. We are expecting Blackpool to be busy this weekend, it being a Bank Holiday, and the Coronation of King Charles III on Saturday.

It was raining as we walked out to Selby Road, just before 09:00, to catch the bus to the bus station, a single-decker on the 40 route, not raining heavy but enough to be annoying.

The coach came in at 10:15, twenty minutes early. We were off from the coach station at twenty five past; it was still raining. We stopped at Birch Services, at 11:11, for half an hour; he rain had stopped and the sun was trying to get out.

We got to the hotel at 13:40, and surprisingly, the room, which was very basic but adequate, was ready to check in. So we got settled in and had a cup of tea before walking in to Blackpool.

We got some chips in Blackpool, from Papa's fish shop. We had intended to have their meal deal, we usually do when we arrive here, but they didn't have any prices up so we didn't know if they still did this. By the time we eventually decided to get something to eat it was too near tea time to eat too much, so we just settled on a portion of chips. Then we had a steady walk, along the seafront, back to the hotel, utilising a few benches along the way.

Dinner was buffet style, very unappetising, we didn't enjoy it.

We had discovered earlier that Blackpool Transport no longer did their 24 hour tickets, which meant to go to Cleveleys for the evening would cost us £6 each. We thought this a bit much to pay just to go to the pub, so instead we spent the evening in Blackpool.

Our first pub was The Counting House; a fucking he'll-hole, full of knob-heads, and far too loud. You couldn't have a conversation, or even think. They had no cask, I had a pint of John Smiths Nitrokeg, served in a plastic glass. OK, plastic Beer served in a plastic glass. We had one drink and couldn't wait to get out. The only redeeming feature was, it was cheap; the John Smiths was only £2.95. Next, we went next door and found a gem. The Little Black Pug. It was busy when we entered, and the music was loud, so we didn't have big expectations. The music was being played by a DJ that liked his own voice a bit too much. We found an area at the back of the pub that was separate from the main crowd, and we managed to get a tall table to sit at. They had Timothy Taylor's Landlord Bitter, my favourite, and served in a handled glass, and at £4.00 a pint, not too out of the way pricewise. The music turned out to be 70s & 80s,with a lot of Wigan Casino influence. We had intended to have just one drink here before moving on to the Wetherspoon's, but had five and finished the night off here. We had a brilliant evening.
